We have developed, in consultation with industry, a visitation application programming interface (API). The API allows QR code systems to ‘speak’ with Victoria’s Department of Health (DH) contact tracing system.
This API enables contact tracers to quickly access check-in data from private provider QR code systems. This will strengthen the privacy of data collected in Victoria.
From 26 March 2021, businesses, venues and facilities in some sectors must use the Victorian Government QR Code Service or a digital system that is API-compatible. These sectors include hospitality, gyms, cinemas and hair and beauty services.
A 28-day compliance amnesty applies from 6pm on 26 March until 6pm on 23 April 2021.

For businesses, organisations, clubs or events
There are 2 ways you can ensure your business is meeting Victoria's coronavirus electronic record-keeping requirements.
Use the Victorian Government’s free QR Code Service
The Victorian Government’s QR Code Service is free for all businesses, organisations, clubs and events to use. It meets record-keeping obligations because it already uses the Victorian Government Visitation to support the contact tracing process.
By using the Victorian Government QR Code Service, both you and your customers can be sure your data is secure. We delete data when it's no longer required.

Use a third-party solution connected to the Victorian Government Visitation API
Your business may already be using a digital QR code solution that uses the API and meets record keeping requirements. If you are happy with your provider, then you may continue to use it.
- Check if your provider is connected on the Visitation API - connected third parties page.
- Learn more about the Victorian Government’s requirements for record-keeping for contact tracing purposes.
If your QR code provider isn't connected to the Victorian Government Visitation , you must switch to the Victorian Government QR Code Service or a provider who is already connected. This will ensure your business is compliant. The new service must be connected to the Department of Health contact tracing system via the API.
If you need to change your provider, check your contract for any costs involved. You may have to keep paying for the app even if you've stopped using it.
For service providers
You must connect to the Victorian Government Visitation API if your Victorian clients have been mandated to use a digital system for record-keeping requirements.
We developed the API to help businesses meet Department of Health contact tracing requirements.
If you are a provider of check-in or digital visitation registration services and you’re ready to connect, get the Victorian Government Visitation .
